Weaving frequently focuses on Left Brain processing: analytical, objective, rational, systematic. In this class we will approach weaving from the Right Side of the Brain with an emphasis on fearless creativity. Instead of spending days in technical discussions and pre-planning, we will design at the loom making intuitive choices that are grounded on good weaving skills and techniques. From whatever tradition you normally approach weaving and life, this is an exciting class for all level students who would like to incorporate more flexibility and personal style into their work with a teacher who guides from the Right side of the brain.
Longer Course Description: This class is intended for beginning students as well as those with extensive weaving backgrounds. We will approach weaving from a somewhat nontraditional angle. While acknowledging that there are people who love the processing, analyzing, math and cerebral work of planning weave structures, there are also many who would enjoy approaching weaving as a creative activity that springs from an intuitive artistic place. Even left brainers who are happily involved in technical planning processes might enjoy a walk on the spontaneous side and learn ways to incorporate a greater flexibility and personal style into their weaving.
But how to do that? Weaving is by nature an activity of organizing and making systems out of hundreds or even thousands of threads. Yes, there is always math involved. Bring your calculator! But come to this class knowing that weaving can also be an activity and process for those who want to take colorful yarns and make exciting cloth while designing “on the fly” as one of my students commented recently.
We will cover: using color effectively, color and weave effect concepts and structures, warp winding, loom set up, strong weaving techniques, efficient use of tools and materials and many techniques you have not been exposed to yet that will make you want to jump and shout.
