Who doesn't love cotton?!
I co-teach a class with a very talented spinner, Leslie Bronson. Leslie has a gentle, nurturing touch and is an outstanding teacher. Cotton is a favorite fiber for many folks, but it is perceived to be more difficult to spin due to its shorter fiber length. With Leslie at the spinning wheel, nothing seems difficult! She also teaches quite a bit of interesting history as she takes her students through many aspects and types of spinning techniques...from the simple drop spindle, to the traditional floor spinning wheels, to the Great Wheel, to the charka which is the spinning tool that we associate with Gandhi.
While we teach together, I bring in the color aspect and teach techniques for using MX colorfast dyes to dye the fibers before and/or after the spinning takes place. This can bring about wonderfully lush colors that would not be possible otherwise. We explore dye techniques to gently shade from hue to hue...or make dramatic leaps of color.
